Gyan Ganga – River of Knowledge (Fighting Fate With Education)
Due to poverty, early marriage, lack of educational facilities, or even gender bias, a lot of women can’t complete their education. When their kids start going to schools, the realization settles in that their education is still incomplete. This is where Tanishka Network is putting efforts so that women can pick up their studies again and attain self-confidence and even jobs if they want to. In the past 2 years, around 1000 women have taken advantage of the adult education provided by YCMA and supported by Tanishka, while some of them even have succeeded in securing jobs for themselves.

Making women aware of the need for completing their education and giving them a platform to discover themselves all over again.

Due to poverty, early marriage, lack of educational facilities, or even gender bias, a lot of women can’t complete their schooling. They grow up and get married without the need of education, but when trouble strikes and they need to take up the role of a bread-earner, they are not equipped & fall victim. Tanishka Group Leader Pournima Pawar had seen many ladies face extreme hardships and helplessness due to this reason and decided to do something about it. She started with Laxminagar, home to many lower middle-class families, and with a lot of footwork, gathered women and made them aware of the problems that could arise due to lack of education. She motivated them to restart their studies and presented the argument that when the kids go to school and their husbands are at work, the ladies could come and study; they would be provided with space and books. The Tanishka group then got retired teachers from all over Pune to come teach these ladies and even roped in Yashwantrao Chavan Open University to provide adult education to them.

Now 3 days a week, around 40 women gather at the Gajanan Maharaj Cloister near Parvati temple hillock to finish their 3rd, 4th or even 11th and 12th standard education. In the past 2 years, around 1000 women have benefitted through this initiative & bettered their lives.

Some time ago, the husband of one of these women passed away and with adult education, she could secure a job in her husband’s office. Now the men in Laxminagar are also getting inspired and Tanishka is helping them. One of the men was working as a guard; but with adult education, he got the opportunity of being a clerk. Tanishka took the next step by imparting training in Fashion Designing, English Speaking and Computer Basics too. Now Tanishka ladies from Jejuri, Pune are planning to do this project for rural women as well.
