Kala Chhaya Cultural Centre, as a part of their golden jubilee celebrations, is felicitating 17 women on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Sunday. The felicitation will be followed by a performance by Chitrangana Aagle-Reshwal (Pakhawaj) and Sukhda Patwardhan (Harmonium).
The programme will be held at Kala Chhaya Cultural Center, Patrakar Nagar. Rashmi Terphale, Principal, Dance department and niece of Guru Prabha Marathe says, “It’s a special year for us, so the members thought we should felicitate women who have made a mark for themselves in our male-dominated society. Our founder director Guru Prabha Marathe also had to work hard to establish the centre.”
The ladies, who will be felicitated, include teacher and dance scholar Sumati Parvati Kumar (wife of Acharya Parvati Kumar who brought international recognition to Indian classical dances Kathak, Kathakali, and Bharata Natyam), Leela Gandhi (she is a well-known Tamasha performer and has been working for the betterment of Tamasha performers in the state), Kirti Shiledar (part of the famous Shiledar family, Kirti Shiledar has lent her voice to various Marathi songs and acted in Marathi musicals), Sushama Deshpande (a social worker and theater personality, she has worked for the upliftment of deprived people), Chitrangana Aagle — Reshwal (the only female Pakhawaj player India, she learned the musical instrument from her father Pandit Ambadas Pant Aagle of the Nana Panse gharana), Jayu Patwardhan (architect and filmmaker), Meena Chandavarkar (noted academician), Vidya Bal (Marathi writer/editor and a social activist particularly in the area of equalisation of the social status of women), Shyamala Vanarase (academician and author), Lalita Nadkarani, Sumantai Kirloskar (social activist), Mangal Baramecha and Nalini Gite (academician).
These women will be felicitated by Shanta Serbajeet Singh, who is the vice president of Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi and Ram Pradhan, chief secretary, Govt of Maharashtra and former Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
