Students, elders need special buses

59
Students and elders face problems in Kothrud and Paud Road areas because of an inefficient bus service by the PMPML. Women members of the Tanishka Foundation demanded that students in the area should have access to a safe transport service. Extra buses should also be arranged for women during rush hours, they demanded, during their meeting on Thursday.

If the experts suggested that the city should have more buses and the existing routes should be rationalised, the civic authorities should implement these suggestions on a priority basis. Many people are dependent on the civic transport system and hence it is important that the transport utility has fully trained manpower. It is also imperative for the city to have a better public transport to make life easier for the city’s population. Improvisations like these will make a lot of difference to thousands of daily commuters.

No civic service can work properly without efficient management. Recommendations made by CIRT need to be implemented by the PMPMl as soon as possible. A large number of passengers have to keep waiting for buses on some routes while buses run without enough passengers on other routes. I have faced this problem on several occasions. As far as adding more buses to the existing fleet is concerned, if a proper study has been conducted to ensure reduction of vehicular pollution and traffic congestion, we should immediately go for it.

Introduction of 1,000 more buses sounds to be the only solution for a city like Pune which has a large number of passengers and less number of buses. A high demand for buses exists on certain routes while some routes do not have enough passengers. I suggest the civic authorities ensure that more buses are available on routes where there is a heavy rush of commuters. The public transport undertaking should seriously consider the suggestions made by an expert organisation like CIRT.

Proper management of the city’s public transport can only be done with technically competent persons and PMPML needs to recruit them immediately. Organisational changes within the PMPML will certainly bring about positive changes in the system. The addition of more buses to the fleet is of prime importance. The civic authorities need to take positive decisions on this issue.
